Electrical Development Company/Toronto Power Company
This was the last private hydroelectric power development company to build on the Canadian side at Niagara, and the only one controlled by Canadian capital. It was founded to provide power to electrical utilities and street railways in Toronto. Construction began in 1903, the cornerstone of the Beaux-Arts power plant above the Falls was laid in 1906, with the first power being delvered to Toronto in 1907. The project was not completed, however until 1913.
Ontario Hydro bought the station in 1922. The plant generated 25 cycle current, and as Ontario converted to the 60 cycle standard, demand for the plant's power declined. The last generators were shut down in 1974.
