Description of Register

A Register of Guests: The Eagle Tavern, P. Whitney and Son (on Cover). By Don Loker, 2000.

This volume covers the period between January 14, 1840 and July 28, 1842. It contains the names, signatures and residences of the guest in the hotel. Thousands of guests came to New York and nearby States and several from many of the 26 States then in the Union. The visitors were mostly average citizens but many others were passing through to new lands in the west. Others were honeymooners. Some were prominent people whose names we would all recognize. On September 30, 1840, W. Hunt of Lockport registered. This was Washington Hunt 10 years before he was Govenor of New York. he was the only Niagara County resident to hold that position. Martin Van Buren of Kinderhook, NY, the 8th President of the US, registered on July 15, 1842, a little more than a year after he was president (1837-1841).
