Scope and Contents note

This record group encompasses the history of the Carborundum Company. Includes: films, photographs, diaries, financial records, advertising campaigns, companies in other countries, blueprints, material from the ceramics museum, artifacts, as well as documenting changes in the company involving Kennecott Copper, Curtiss-Wright and Standard Oil.

Biographical / Historical

Carborundum began in 1891 in Monongehela, PA, moved to Niagara Falls, NY in 1895. 1908, establishes a plant in Dusseldorf, Germany. In 1913, The company launches a U.K. subsidary with a plant in Trafford Park, Manchester. In 1960, Carborundum U.K. establishes the Resin Plant. In 1978, Carborundum is aquired by Standard Oil (Sohio). 1981, Kennecott Copper aquires Sohio. 1984 Kennecott begins to sell off Carborundum operations. 1996: aquires Abrafract Abrasives, Hodges Jacques, and Acton and Borman in Germany. 1997: changes name to Carbo PLC. The Collection is up to 1989 but company still exists today. Includes British Petroleum and SOHIO in the later years. There is also a folder for Tam Ceramics, whose parent company, Cookson group, bought a former Monofrax refactory plant that had belonged to Carborundum (later Saint-Gobain Corp.) in 1996. Saint-Gobain still has an office in Niagara Falls, NY.
